Engineering Technology and Management Research â⬠MyAssignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about the Engineering Technology and Management Research. Answer: Introduction Operating system is the most important part of software. It is the base on which computer depends. It is also abbreviated as OS. It connects the hardware with the application so that the user is able to access the computer properly. In simple word it can be said that an OS is software which helps in running the programs of the computer and which helps in making use of the hardware (Bhardwaj, Chouhan, 2013). The main aim of an operating system is to improve the efficiency of the computer and make it convenient for people to use it properly. An operating system provides mechanism to the computer for process synchronization. It also keeps a track on the memory. Ubuntu is an African concept which means humanity towards others. Linux operating system is the version on which Ubuntu is based, Linux is also known as Debian GNU. Initially in 2009, Ubuntu developers noticed that is a scope of improvement. Therefore, they gradually developed it from simple interface security based system (2009) to center for monochrome elements like books and magazines (2012). The best part of this OS is that it is free and can be used by all. Other open source programs do not have any strict schedule for up gradation but Ubuntu upgrade its program in every six months (Perez, 2017). Ubuntu does not have graphical user interface but it can be installed on the will of the user. Yes it seems to be 4 point user friendly. As it is open software therefore it can be installed through CD or by downloading Ubuntu ISO file. This software easily works in handheld devices like pc, TV and cellphones. It includes line speed kernel networking. Yes Ubuntu can be connected with sof tware like android, IOS etc. this software also helps in using multimedia like MP3 player, webcam etc. Android Inc. was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White in 2003. Their main aim was to introduce software for handheld industry. 2005 was a turning year for this company when Google acquired Android Inc. (Kundu, Paul, 2010). The uniqueness of this software is that it can run multiple apps at a same time, also have 3D graphics like tapping, pinching, swiping etc. Yes android is 4. User friendly. Ice cream sandwich, jelly bean kitkat etc. all are 4. versions of android. This software comes preinstalled in cellphones and it is the best handheld software till date. It creates the easy accessibility in phones etc. Android can be connected through different networks but the user first need to ensure that their information stay safe while connecting. It can be connected with java, windows, python etc. One can easily access multimedia in android software. This OS is a current series of Unix-based graphical operating system which is developed to run only in Apples Macintosh computers. This is not open source software so a person needs to pay for installation of this software but it comes inbuilt in apple computers and laptops. Initially it was launched in 1999 as Mac OS X Server 1.0 and further in 2001 Mac OS X the latest series was launched (Apple, 2017). One of the best features of this is that it is aqua user interface with water like elements in it which is the best GUI. No this software is not 4 point user friendly (Dhotre, 2009). This software is mainly found in apple devices like iPhone, iPad etc. and multimedia as well i.e. iPod. This software is designed for 10. Speed and it cannot be connected with any other network except apple soft wares. IOS (iPhone operating system) is yet another software which belongs to the apple family like Mac OS X. it only runs in apple hardware like iPad, iPod, iPhone. It was originated in 2007 by Steve jobs which is closed source software. Its user interface is upon direct manipulation like swiping, tapping etc. No this software is not 4 point user friendly (Feist, 2016). This software is created for handheld device but only of apple hardware. No the IOS cannot be connected with android or any other software. This software comes inbuilt in all apple devices. As this software only works in apple products like iPod etc. therefore it cannot work in other multimedia devices (Joshi, tapaswi, 2005). Microsoft was introduced by Paul Allen and Bill Gates on April 4, 1975 for the basic purpose of selling interpreters for the Altair 8800. Further, Windows was announced by Microsoft on November 10, 1983 for MS-DOC as a graphical user interface and to compete with Macintosh operating system. Its initial versions (1.0 to 3.11) were programmed only for MS-DOC later it evolved as windows 95 based on 16 and 32-bit user space (Perez, 2017). It cannot be called an open source or closed because only Microsoft can change the codes but unlike MAC OS X it can be installed in a variety of computers. This software is most widely used in the market as per the net market share. Its latest version also includes touch through which user can play media on other devices as well and also provides accessibility when the user is away from their computers (Ritchie, 2003). Windows GUI is authentic, open and reflective. Yes windows is 4 point user friendly. This software comes preinstalled in latest hardware . All the Nokia phones contain windows software except which no other phones have it as an inbuilt feature. Yes windows can work properly in 8 point speed and it has connectivity with NTFS. Windows media players, web cam comes in built with this software but other users can also install it on their will. Conclusion All software has their different qualities depending upon the requirement of the users. But if all aspects are taken Mac OS X, time machine is best, windows is widely accessed in computers and there is no replacement of android in cellphones. Concluding, all software has their own features which might be resourceful to user depending upon their need. References Apple, (2017). MacBook Pro: a touch of genius. Those Non-Ethnocentric Americans free essay sample
To be a nerd, or not to be a nerd, that is the question. It is the 21st century (the year 2012 to be exact) and humanity continues to advance. Unfortunately human advances along with humanity. This includes myself, as my ignorance continues to grow. The only difference is that now I am aware of it. Since I am an American, I will be talking about America, the greatest country in the world. In our bleakest hour many of us watch football on television, hum along to Ms. Gaga and Ms. Perry, and celebrate American culture a little too much. We can see those beer-bellied Americans always eating burgers, drinking alcohol, and holding shotguns during the sacred day of the 4th of July. The problem is that Americans are uninterested in different cultures as they look towards popular culture for entertainment. What I am calling for is that everyone should decide to be a culture nerd for a day, and try to expand his or her horizons on different cultures. Some people may argue that there is no problem with celebrating and taking pride in oneââ¬â¢s own culture. While that may be true, Americans in general are ethnocentric and take the celebrations too far. The celebration of the Constitution that follows us into every room, the freedom flag with the 50 stars stands by in all the classrooms, and the celebration of Democracy, all of which instill nationalism into us. This results in us ignoring some countries that seem inferior to us, which is bad. It also leads to us interfering in other countriesââ¬â¢ affairs, which is bad. Itââ¬â¢s really a lose-lose situation. Most high schools in the United States promote three languages: English, French, and Spanish. Schools in Europe promote French, Spanish, Italian, German, and English. The rest of the world (except for some parts of Africa and the Kangaroos Down Under) realizes that they need to be more connected in global relationships. Examples of this include Chinese and Japanese st udents learning English, and yet Americans donââ¬â¢t learn Chinese and Japanese. Since our economy is one of the best, other countries learn English to delve into our private sector, while Americans do not have an obvious monetary incentive to learn other language. Since the 1940ââ¬â¢s America has become a Super Power and a city upon a hill for the world to see. Even in 1630 we though highly of ourselves (however, we were not actual Americans at that time) as John Winthrop made his ââ¬Å"City upon a Hillâ⬠speech, inspiring the Puritans to build a perfect city that will be the light of the world for all to see. Although in modern times, the world is willing to fight an uphill battle to raze our city that shines so brightly. After all, even monkeys like to throw rocks at shiny objects. Americanization has occurred in most parts around the world, meeting resistance with some groups. Americanization is the influence of American culture on other cultures or be the diseases that everything we touch becomes American. The Middle East has been a victim of Americanization, with religious extremists opposing Americanization. The result was a tragedy that shook Americaââ¬â¢s world. Our response: Now donââ¬â¢t be messing with America, or else weââ¬â¢ll bring Democracy to your country. To bring democracy into other countries may upset the indigenous population. Americans need to become more aware of other cultures that they affect because they are in a state of cultural loss, which may lead to cultural death. Now that the problem is known, letââ¬â¢s move on to defining the solution. The operational definition of ââ¬Å" cultural nerdâ⬠needs to be established. The first things that may come to mind with the word ââ¬Å"nerdâ⬠are glasses, geek, loser, pocket-protectors, and social outcast. The fact that Americans give negative connotations to the word ââ¬Å"nerdâ⬠demonstrates that being a ââ¬Å"nerdâ⬠is not desired. I want to change the connotation so that being a nerd is good. Therefore to be a ââ¬Å"culture nerdâ⬠is to celebrate the under-acknowledged culture of the foreign culture, (demographics not isolate the cultural nerd; Americans in general are called to be cultural nerds). How does one become a cultural nerd? Simple. Select a country that is ââ¬Å"interestingâ⬠(peopleââ¬â¢s tastes differ, I for one love the Japanese culture) and use the Internet to gain information. It does require a bit of reading that may strain some peopleââ¬â¢s minds, but the Internet is the quickest way to access information. Other than reading about the culture, experiencing the culture would provide the best results. Two of the easiest ways to be a cultural nerd include music and food. Poorer countries eat to live, while Americans live to eat. Food is one of the most central aspects of culture. Tasting different foods is not only good for the soul but good for the stomach as well. Perhaps eating crickets will lead to understanding of African dietary practices and appreciation of American food. Another option is music. An excellent example is the rise of the Korean guy named ââ¬Å"Psyâ⬠with his hypnotizing song, ââ¬Å"Oppa Gangnam Style.â⬠When it was introduced on radios (which facilitated its popularity) Americans went crazy over this song, even though it was in Korean. This raised awareness for Korean music and may have led some Americans to appreciate Korea and explore its culture. The solution of becoming a cultural nerd for a day would provide the best results. For one, I am not asking people to change their lifestyles for the rest of their lives. Rather I humbly ask that people just be interested in another culture for a day and then return back to routine activities, but more aware about other countries. Other solutions that could be offered include advertising and travelling. Advertising is aimed primarily at businesses to spend money in the advertising country. Most Americans are not willing to donate money to some foreign country. Advertising of specific countries may attract a specific audience, such as die-hard fanatics of the country, descendents, or the native people who are homesick. Including everyone in the process would bring better results. Along with advertising comes travel, which is really effective, except itââ¬â¢s for a small audience. International trips are expensive and Americans have few days off compared to Europe (perhaps they go on vacations and experience the world more than we do), thus Americans cannot afford to spend the time or money travelling. Study the culture, he said. It would provide benefits, he said. Now, why would people complain about studying other peopleââ¬â¢s cultures? The counter-argument for being a cultural nerd arises when one is not making money. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s not a enough timeâ⬠, one may say. ââ¬Å"We should improve ourselvesâ⬠, another might say. Fortunately, there are 24 hours in a day. When one is not working, he or she is just procrastinating. However the old notion is time is money, but there is plenty of time to explore culture, and all I ask for is to keep in mind of another culture for a day. In order to improve ourselves, we must understand others. We can see their flaws and differences, and assess our own flaws. Maybe then we will improve ourselves. If we do not understand other cultures, it will lead to humanityââ¬â¢s demise. No, I am not kidding. Remember that thing called Americanization? If not check the dictionary and spell check, the word is there. Americanization upsets other countries, and most people are not aware of it. If we show an effort to preserve their culture and back away, they might appreciate us. This presents a slight problem. To save ourselves, we must back away from the foreign country (prevent Americanization). To destroy ourselves, we back away from the foreign country (leading to ethnocentricity). The middle ground would include a state of awareness for other cultures, but does not involve ourselves extensively in others cultures. We can never be rid of popular culture (unless we were to return to the dark ages). However humanity can change popular culture to consider other cultures. International phenomenon, such as the artist Psy and the food Ramen, have infected our popular culture and nestled in it. The solution lies within relatively cheap methods to learn about other cultures through the Internet. By being a culture nerd, people can investigate other countries and see their lifestyles. Listening to the cultureââ¬â¢s music and eating the cultureââ¬â¢s food is relatively cheap compared to travelling. For now being aware of how America impacts others and seeing how others live is enough. Being a cultural nerd that does research allows for information. Until they visit the country and practice the foreign customs, the nerds will never understand foreign countries. In fact sometimes we do not understand each other, but we must set out to understand one another as well as ourselves. If we do not underst and ourselves, we cannot understand others. I have given insight about most Americans, so with that insight they can try to understand others. If we fail to do this, disastrous results include war, violence, and alienation. But do not worry; it is not as bad the Universe collapsing in on itself as time continues further. Whether one is alive to culture after the war breaks out is question that only you can answer.

Politcal Power Essays - Elite Theory, Military-industrial Complex
Politcal Power Political power can simply be defined as the power to influence. The power to influence is essentially the power to control. When pertaining to political matters, the most influential people in any form of government have the most power. The underlying argument is between who has the most influence. Is it the elite or the majority? There are four theories of who truly governs. The first theory is clearly elitist. Karl Marx has said that all government in any way shape or form is controlled by whichever class dominates the economy. In all societies there is an economic struggle between two major classes. Although the working class is the majority they have the least political power. This is solely because they have less money than the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie on the other hand dominate the working class economically simply because they own the factories where the working class work. The theory also represents the government as a machine designed to favor to the dominant classes interest. This is why a Marxist would believe that it is pointless to study a government because it has none of its own power. It runs on whoever feeds it, and in this case it is the bourgeoisie. The second theory is most similar to the first. It states that the nongovernmental elite has the most political power. This time when I mention elite it goes beyond the bourgeoisie. This elite is composed of corporate leaders, high ranking military officers, and a small group of political leaders. Other groups can be added, such as the leaders of the media, labor leaders and the heads of special interest groups. Many more groups can be added but the basic underlying idea of this theory is that a very small group of high status officials not involved in government contain the majority of political power. The third theory tends to sway from the first two theories. It states that political power is concentrated within some of the people who actually run the government, the bureaucrats. Because the bureaucrats are appointed officials it separates itself even farther apart from the other theories. The bureaucrats are only influenced by the people that appoint them. This is why the political power is contained within the government. The fourth and final theory can be described as a combination of the first three theories. It delves into the dominance of power between the elite themselves. All of the elite groups have a certain amount of political control, and they themselves are responsive to their follower?s interests. Their followers being the majority have the most political power in this theory because they influence the elite. If the majority isn?t happy the elite wont be elite anymore. Majoritarian and Elitist politics represent two ends of the spectrum of political thought. The four theories of who governs is clearly an elitist?s point of view. The majority is influenced by the mass media, and it is rare to find anyone with their own ideas. The majority is told what they want. Politics Essays

George Milton and Lennie Small Essay Example
George Milton and Lennie Small Essay Example George Milton and Lennie Small Paper George Milton and Lennie Small Paper The novella ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ tells us about the tragic story of George Milton and Lennie Small; two migrant ranch workers during the Great Depression in California. The Great Depression was a time of hardship for everybody especially ranch workers. It prevented people from living the life they desired. If there was an opening for one man, there would be ten men competing for it. They would work for extremely low wages or even just for food. Many people lived in poverty bartering between jobs. The story also took place during the time of The Dust Bowl, or the Dirty Thirties, which was a period of severe dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage. Millions of acres of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes; many of these families migrated to California and other states, where they found economic conditions little better during the Great Depression than those they had left. Owning no land, many became migrant workers who travelled from farm to farm working hard at starvation wages just like George and Lennie. This story is contaminated with several tragic incidents, some extremely mournful and others disastrous. They range from loneliness and racism to broken dreams and even death. In the novel, Steinbeck creates an atmosphere that makes us feel as if all the characters are stuck in a cycle of sleeping, eating, and working, eating and then sleeping again. It is as if the lives of all the characters are inevitable and that there is no other possible outcome, the sense that it is the characterââ¬â¢s fate. : This can be seen in the dream of George and Lennie who plan to work for themselves and be their own bosses but in the end they never make it and life just carries on with its natural course. We are informed that George realises this when he says, ââ¬Å"I think I knowed weââ¬â¢d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would. â⬠Also the hopes and dreams of Lennie and George were not doomed from the very beginning, but the fact that Lennie had such a penchant for soft things and Curleys wife was constantly seeking attention, created a critical turn in the story. After Lennie accidently killed Curleys wife, it becomes inevitable that mentally challenged Lennie must either be contained or die. This can also be seen in the death of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife who is simply a character type and the only woman on the ranch. She is defined by her role: Curleyââ¬â¢s wife or possession. George and Candy call her by other names such as ââ¬Å"jailbaitâ⬠or ââ¬Å"tart. â⬠She wears too much makeup and dresses like a ââ¬Å"whoreâ⬠with red fingernails and red shoes with ostrich feathers. In the barn scene, however, Steinbeck changes the readerââ¬â¢s initial thoughts about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife by the stillness and innocence he portrays through her death. Steinbeck tries to show us that even the worst of us have humanity and also from the very beginning, from when George and Lennie had to leave weed, to the death of the puppy, till the day Curleyââ¬â¢s wife died it was like a cycle of bigger and bigger offences and was unavoidable or inevitable. This book is also tragic because of the unfulfilled and shattered dreams of the characters.

Internment Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Internment - Research Paper Example Cause of the Internment The provocation for the Americans to enter into a war was brought about by Japan which by then had joined the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis in September 1940 by signing the tripartite pact. The United States got alarmed when Japan anticipated building an East Asian empire. The United Sates responded to the invasion of the Japanese forces into French Indochina by adding items to a lengthy list of embargoed Japanese goods and eventually the US froze all itsââ¬â¢ trades with the Japan. In 1941 the US intelligence sent out warnings to commanders of U.S bases in the pacific when he become aware of Japanese plans to attack. The American officials did not think the threat was significant but they were proven wrong on December 7th 1941 when the Japanese planes bombed the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor in an attempt to destroy American sea power in the pacific. During this time the Japanese destroyed nearly 200 aircraft, eight battleships, three cruisers and almost 2,400 Americ ans died. On December 8th, the senate voted in favor of Franklin Rooseveltââ¬â¢s request for a declaration of war on Japan. Italy and Germany joined with Japan on 11th December on declaring war to the U.S., this led the U.S. into world war two (Inada, Society, pxi). Japanese American Internment The Japanese American internment occurred in the year 1942 and ended in the year 1945. Japanese war time internment refers to a forcible relocation and internment by the United States government in 1942, where around 110,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans who lived along the pacific coast of the United States to housing facilities that were called war relocation camps (these camps were 10 and they were situated in seven states) at the wake of imperial Japanââ¬â¢s attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 7th December 1941 (Burgan, p10). The Japanese Americans internment was applied unequally through out the United States. Franklin Roosevelt endorsed the internment using an Executive order 9066 to the military that was signed on February 19th 1942 using his authority as commander-in-chief to exercise war powers. The order gave the military the right to relocate United States citizens who were thought to be potential enemies of the state. Many Japanese ancestries lost their homes, businesses and all their worldly possessions during the internment. The Japanese American who were also known as the Nikkei community was made up of several various distinct groups who included; the Issei, Nisei, Sansei and Kibei, the Issei were the first generation and immigrants living in the US and they were considered to be more dangerous because they were spies for Japan and still closely tied to their mother country. The Nisei were the second generation and these were people who were born in the United States to people of Japanese ancestry from the Japan. The Sansei were the third generation and these were people who were born by the Nisei and were most assimilated with the Americ an culture. The Kibei were the U.S. citizens who were educated in the Japan. All the first three groups (Issei, Nisei and the Sansei) were interned. (Robinson, p4). Housing/the internment camps The Japanese families were housed in various camps around the U.S., the camps were enclosed with barbed wire, sentry post, armed guards and several towers. These camps had not much detailed planning as they were built quickly during the summer of 1942. The residences were long

Human resource management. Training and development Essay
Human resource management. Training and development - Essay Example It increases the level of individual and organisational competence and helps to reconcile the gap between what should happen, and desired targets and standards of performance; and what is happening and actual levels of work performance. According to Armstrong (2001): "training needs analysis is partly concerned with defining the gap between what is happanng and what should happen. However, it is necessary to avoid falling into the trap of adopting the "deficiency model" approach, which implies that training is only about putting things rights that have gone wrong" (Armstrong, 2001, p. 551-552). Training needs assessment is necessary to ensure an adequate supply of staff who are technically and socially competent, and capable of career advancement into specialist departments or management positions. There is, therefore, a continual need for the process of staff development, and training fulfils an important part of this process. Training should be viewed, therefore, as an integral part of the process of total quality management. Armstrong divides training needs assessment into three levels: corporate, group and individual level (Armstrong, 2001). A large number of organisations make some use of separate training needs analysis, although this is usually a periodic rather than a regular activity. There are many different ways of conducting such assessments, but they usually involve some form of survey, either by discussion or questionnaire, with managers. This does not automatically remove the problem of a failure to perceive the real needs, which occurs with annual appraisals (Beardwell, Holden, 2004). The same people are involved, and unless they are provoked by the approach into a different way of thinking, the probability is that their response will be the same as in the appraisal. One approach, which is somewhat broader than an assessment of training needs is to design a workshop for senior managers to work through what is needed to implement some of the strategic decisions the company has made (Reed, 2001). Part of this workshop would involve a consideration of the skills required against what they feel exists within the company. This can help managers to perceive needs which may otherwise be hidden to them, such as the many capabilities needed to manage strategic alliances, and the degree to which the managers who report to them have experience or knowledge that is relevant. Another approach is bottom-up feedback. This approach can be used in performance management processes, as a basis for personal improvement, and in order to gain a more objective view of company capabilities and areas of management weakness. They are particularly useful for measuring capabilities in management and interpersonal skills, aspects of a manager's behaviour which are experienced by others besides a manager's boss, peers and subordinates, and in some cases customers and suppliers. All the methods take readings from one or all of these groups of people, as well as requiring the manager to undertake a

Workplace simulation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Workplace simulation - Essay Example The company prides itself on having a large customer base and manufacturing plants in China, San Jose, Georgia and Michigan. This expansion and apparent success may be attributed to the organizations commitment to R&D, customer satisfaction, quality management, employee satisfaction and clear vision of the future. This is clear from the company's mission statements. However, to further enhance and maintain this success Riordan Manufacturing Inc. intends to take advantage of more sophisticated, state of the art information systems technology into its HR department. This is successfully achieved if the right information is gathered to determine what is technology would best enhance the achievement of company's mission. Before Riordan manufacturing embarks on this major project, it has to ensure that enough information is gathered from all stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project in order to make a well thought out and informed decision. Techniques of gathering information include; questionnaire, internet research, surveys, interview and prototyping (experiments) For this project to be feasible, I would propose HRIS. An online solution facilitates data entry, data tracking, and information needs of the Human Resource (Susan M. Health field). This is because, Riordan manufacturers Inc. ... So how does HRIS enable this A good HRIS is capable of managing employee's information such as benefits calculation and updating, payroll administration resume processing and management, analyzing employee information and so on. The advantage with this system is that it frees the employee's time of petty destructions and enables them focus on more strategic functions in the company. To the managers it provides them with relevant information regarding the employees, which enable them give legal or ethical support to its employees. This is inline with Riordan Inc mission thus a great asset. (Reh, 2001) HRMS are form of human resource information systems, which facilitate the administration tasks, and processes employees information right from employment to the time they exit the organization companies like spectrum HRS Corporation offers particularly good packages for this systems. The benefit of this state of the Art solution is that it will reduce administrative cost, and increase pr ofitability. Riordan manufacturing future goal is to achieve and maintain reasonable profitability and ensure financial and human capital is available for sustainable growth. I feel that installing a HRMS would greatly contribute to this end. Not only will a HRMS reduce costs it has an automated feature that instantly analyses and provides reports and reduces paper work. In addition a HRMs provides a centralized information source thorough which the organization intranet and extranets provide access to the centralized information server. The benefit of this is that the employees and managers morale boosted and adequate time left for HR managers to focus on more important issues that need hands-on approach. The company
